Trieu Tran Duc

Former admin of HVA - the largest Vietnamese hacker forum circa 2006 - 2014, and co-founder of CMC Infosec, Vietnam's largest and best choice for national blockchain security.

Early life

In 7th grade, Duc's parents bought him a PC that's worth about $1000, which was a lot at the time. 3 years later, he started to get into programming and wrote his first scripts. In 2000, Duc got a scholarship for Technology and Business at Lahti University, Finland.

Four years in Finland

As he got to Finland, Duc had to adapt to a whole new learning environment. Everything from reading and studying to signing up and checking scores for exams was done online. Duc spent his first Christmas break away from home amidst the pile of book he borrowed from a nearby library, practically burying himself and his home-sickness altogether. After that, he put all of his free time into studying and practicing all things cybersecurity, while also working a handful of part-time jobs to cover the cost of his researches.

HVA Hacker Forums

A little bit after returning to Vietnam, Duc heard rumors about a hacker group named HVA and their forums, where the not-so-ethical hackers go to brag about their "accomplishments". Not feeling too fond of these griefers, he decided that he would give them a warning by hacking into their infrastructure and talking directly to the administrative council. After each side clarified their intentions, Duc realised that the admins wanted to stop the bad behaviour too, and with the help of a few friends, he later rebuilt HVA into a group focused on cybersecurity instead of griefing.

2004's First Place Winner

'Trí Tuệ Việt Nam' (which roughly translates to The Vietnamese Intelligence/Insight), is a yearly competition where Vietnamese programmers under 30 submitted and presented their programs, scripts and apps, to see who or which group made the most helpful, creative or generally better one. Duc had a program named MoonSecure made back in 2001 that he kind of used for HVA's security a few times already, but never really wanted to bring to a competition. However, after seeing some other cybersecurity programs on the list, he changed his mind and signed up last-minute. Duc was the last person to enter, but he won first place in the end, beating out multiple teams.
